Nicaragua’s president accuses media of promoting his death
President Daniel Ortega compared his situation with that of Barack Obama, saying media outlets are promoting his assassination, El Nuevo Diario reports.
Ignoring recent assaults on the news media and journalists, Ortega said freedom of expression abounds in Nicaragua, and the media “says what they want and make up what they want.”
He also accused a Dutch member of the European Parliament Hans van Baalen of plotting his overthrow, La Prensa adds. During a two-day trip to Nicaragua, van Baalen met with opposition leaders and criticized Ortega’s reelection moves, prompting the government to call him an “interventionist” and ask him to leave the country.
