Ahead of protests, Nicaragua's opposition media report new threats and harassment

The new acts were revealed firsthand by the country's two largest newspapers and by Radio Corporación, the only opposition radio station that broadcasts nationwide, AFP reports.

According to El Nuevo Diario newspaper, supporters of the Daniel Ortega government threw stones at a vehicle carrying a team of its reporters. Meanwhile, La Prensa reported an act of mechanical sabotage in its printing presses that could hinder its publication. It suggested that politics were behind that act.

Both media are critical of Ortega. They note that these incidents occur at a time when the government is using increasingly aggressive language against independent media, and on the eve of a massive protest scheduled for this weekend. However, Ortega denied that his government represses freedom of expression. He also accused the opposition of "excessive debauchery" as it prepares to demonstrate Saturday (Nov. 21) in Managua under strong security measures, AFP says in another story.
