Turkey's ruling party claimed here on Wednesday that it would like to see leaders of the 1980 military coup prosecuted following the change to the amendment in the Constitution that previously prohibited such trials.

The statement was made by Omer Celik, deputy chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), at a press conference held in Istanbul.

The senior party figure said that the military coup leaders should be brought to the court and they should be tried because they committed crimes against the humanitarian.

"However, it is up to the judiciary whether or not the period that the statute of limitations prescribes is deemed to be over," he said. "In my opinion, the coup leaders are a group of murderers. "

Shortly after the approval of a package of government-sponsored constitutional amendments on Sunday, Turkish nongovernmental organizations, labor unions and some groups filed petitions on Monday to try ex-president Kenan Evren, a former general, over his role in the 1980 coup.

The groups leapt into action by filing petitions in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir calling for Evren and at least two other coup leaders to be tried.

A group of people, including Peace and Democracy Party deputy Ufuk Urasm, and journalists chanted slogans by saying that "Kenan Evren Must be Tried" in front of the court house in Istanbul.

A statement was read out on behalf of the group noting that after 30 years, a big opportunity appeared, and coup leaders should account for what they did on September 12.

Group members gave the petition signed by 120 people to Istanbul deputy chief public prosecutor Turan Colakkadi.

Former president and general Kenan Evren, the then commanders, ministers, bureaucrats and governors are among suspects mentioned in the petition.

After the military seized power, about 50 people were executed, hundreds of thousands were arrested, many were tortured, hundreds died in custody and many disappeared.

Evren has defended the coup, saying military intervention was needed to bring an end to years of violence between left-wing and right-wing factions in which about 5,000 people were killed.

Evren became president in the wake of the coup, a position he held until 1989.
