THE body of a 15-year-old girl, who died of leukemia at her home Tuesday morning, was donated to Shenzhen University school of medicine in accordance with her wishes.

The girl, named Zhong Kelan, had been suffering leukemia for a year and eight months.

Accompanied by her parents, Zhong’s remains were sent to Shenzhen University School of Medicine Tuesday afternoon.

Zhong was Shenzhen’s ninth body donor since the resumption of remains donation early this year, said a member of staff, surnamed Wang, from the organ donation office of Shenzhen Red Cross on Tuesday.

Zhong, a junior-two student at Jinbi Middle School, was diagnosed with leukemia in December last year. Her great pain, and the medical expenses imposed on her impoverished parents — who are newspaper sellers — eventually caught the attention of the media, and people flocked to the family’s aid.

Zhong’s family received 530,000 yuan (US$72,700) in donations for her treatment.

Volunteers from Shenzhen University sold flowers on the street on Mothers’ Day to raise money for her.

A charity fund in Shenzhen had promised to pay for a bone marrow transplant and her school tuition fees after her recovery — which never came.

“Without all this help, my daughter would have gone earlier,” said Zhong’s mother, in tears.

“My girl was very filial and often sold newspapers for me,” said Zhong’s father.

The girl had asked to be discharged from hospital due to the high cost of her treatment fees, which for a long time were unaffordable.

Zhong had hoped to donate her cornea and other remains to medical science if she could not be cured, her father said.

“We wanted to follow our daughter’s will and wish to reward those who helped us,” Zhong’s father said.

Because a leukemia patient’s cornea cannot be used for transplantation, Zhong’s remains were donated for research.
