Rescuers are struggling to reach at least 6,000 people in southern China's island province of Hainan, after floods have wreaked chaos submerging more than 200 villages.

After initially containing floodwaters, a major reservoir of the Wanquan River was forced to discharge water Tuesday night as its levels had become unacceptably high, which resulted in the flooding of the villages, the flood control headquarters in Qionghai City in the east of the island said Wednesday.

Rescuers were yet to reach those stranded by the flooding, said a spokesman of the headquarters.

Torrential rains have battered Hainan for six days. Parts of the island had received an average 324.7 mm of rainfall.

Zhu Haifu, an elderly in Wupi Village, said it has been the heaviest rains he had seen during his 60-year life.

About 150 soldiers had been dispatched to assist in the evacuation of villagers to safe ground.

To date 64,360 residents in Hainan had been evacuated away from their homes, as floodwaters had inundated 544 villages. Several cities including the provincial capital of Haikou and the beach resort of Sanya had also suffered flooding.

Hainan Island is a famous tropical tourist resort and attracts millions of tourists every year.

As wind speeds decreased Wednesday, ships that could resist winds stronger than 51 kms per hour (level 7) resumed navigation across the Qiongzhou Straits, where ship services between the province and the mainland had been suspended since Sunday leaving 6,000 people stranded.

But highway traffic in the eastern part of the province remained paralyzed.

The floods also damaged 7,420 hectares of crops and destroyed another 2,260 hectares, according to the provincial civil affairs department.
