‘Hero‘ seeks compensation from saved girl
CHANGZHOU, China, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A Chinese man is suing a student he saved from drowning, seeking compensation for medical expenses incurred as a result of his jumping into an icy lake.
Yang Yong, 34, a former ginger vendor from Changzhou in eastern China‘s Jiangsu province, pulled Huang Fei from a lake in 1999. He says he has suffered severe arthritis ever since, and owes $1,250 in medical bills he is unable to pay, Xinhua reported Tuesday.
Yang is seeking $32,500 to cover past and future treatment and loss of earnings for the rest of his life. He is suing both Yang, who was a 17-year-old student at the time of the accident, and Chen Shengdi, who accidentally pushed Huang into the lake while she was riding her bicycle.
Judge Wang Junjun said Yang has a good chance of winning his case under local law, which requires the beneficiary of a life-saving act to "compensate the sacrifice made by the hero."
Yang received about $3,000 and a medal from the city after the incident. Provincial laws say the government should take care of "heroes" like Yang, but the rule is vague and does not specify which government department is responsible in such cases.
