Driver’s wife apologizes to victim’s family

THE wife of Hong Kong driver Liang Guanbiao, whose truck allegedly dragged away and killed a 4-month-old baby April 25, offered an apology to the victim’s family at Nanling hospital Monday.

She gave 3,000 yuan (US$439) to Li Yun, the mother of baby Zhou Menglin, to express her condolences.

Li remained in hospital for 10 days after Liang’s truck allegedly knocked her down at an intersection of Busha Road, Longgang District, and dragged away Zhou. Zhou’s remains were found in Tanglangshan Tunnel on April 28, four days after the incident.

Liang’s wife, whose name was not revealed, was accompanied by two police officers when she arrived at the hospital. She said sorry for the tragedy her husband had allegedly caused, the Daily Sunshine said yesterday, quoting Zhou Xiaobin, the baby’s uncle.

The family refused to accept the money, but Liang’s wife left the money on Li’s hospital bed, according to Zhou.

The family is still waiting for results of a police investigation into the accident.

Many residents visited the hospital to donate money to the family and express their condolences during the May Day holidays.

According to Hong Kong newspapers, Liang, born in 1978, went to Hong Kong with his mother to reunite with his father after completing his secondary school education on the mainland. He was married in 2008 and lived in Longhua Subdistrict.

Liang is in police custody, and has talked of his fear of being beaten to death following the incident.

Liang is facing charges of carrying out a hit-and-run and intentional homicide.

The city’s Project Care office has opened an account for Zhou Menglin’s family at the Shenzhenwan branch of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. Residents can call the office on 8352-2823 for inquiries.(Han Ximin)
