A massive fireworks show over Tiananmen Square in Beijing has capped a day of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the Communist Party coming to power in China.
On the ground, there was a massive performance, featuring choreographed light displays, singing and dancing from a cast of thousands.
Chinese state media proclaimed that the fireworks display would be the world's biggest, surpassing even those for the Beijing Olympic Games last year.
The day's celebrations began with a mass parade through Tiananmen Square in a show of power and resources.
President Hu Jintao, swapping his usual business suit for a grey Mao suit, was driven through
Mr Hu then joined the country's other political leaders, including Premier Wen
To rousing marching music, the country's latest military hardware, including examples of the country's missile technology, was paraded in front of the leaders.
The participants rehearsed for months to make sure every step was in perfect unison.
Some parade floats showed off the country's industrial and technological progress, such as this one carrying taikonaut Zhai Zhigang, representing the space programme.
Some 30,000 guests were invited to watch the parade in person, but most Beijingers were told to stay at home and watch the event on television.
