Biography:
James H. Austin was educated at Brown University where received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1944. He obtained qualified in medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1948 and did his medical internship and assistant residency in neurology at Boston City Hospital. From 1953 he was a Neuropathology Fellow at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and from 1953 to 1955 he held a neurologic residency at the Neurological Institute of New York.
Austin served in the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps at the 155 Station Hospital in Yokohama, Japan, and at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. From 1955-1966, he held academic appointments at the University of Oregon Medical School, and from 1967-74 was Professor and Head of Neurology, and later Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology. From 1976 Austin occupied the chair in neurology at the University of Colorado Medical School. He has been a visiting professor in New Delhi;, Kyoto, Stockholm, London, Akita, and Tokyo.
By spring 2001 James H. Austin was affiliate professor of philosophy at the University of Idaho.
He is the author of more than 140 professional publications.
