Al-Qaida militants on Tuesday gunned down a security colonel working at the Yemen LNG company in southern Shabwa province, local official said.

"Gunmen of al-Qaida in Shabwa's provincial capital city of Ataq intercepted the car of Colonel Ali Thwaba, who is also the security director of foreign oil and gas companies in Yemen LNG company in Balhaf city port, and shot him dead," the official told Xinhua by phone on condition of anonymity.

Shabwa province is the ancestral homeland of the U.S.-born radical preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, who appeared in a 23-minute video tape posted on the internet on Friday, inciting Muslims to kill Americans.

"Do not consult anyone in killing Americans. Killing the devil does not need any fatwa (religious edict), Americans are the party of Satan and killing them is a Muslim duty," Awlaki said in his video message.

On Nov. 2, the Yemeni security court put al-Awlaki on trial in absence for alleged charge of inciting killing foreigners, especially Americans.

Since the beginning of this year, al-Qaida militants in Yemen, also known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), has been targeting security and intelligence officers and killed dozens of them.

Yemen raised international security concerns again after two parcel bombs originated from the country were found on cargo planes bound for the United States late October.
