Panna Rittikrai and Tony Jaa’s “Ong Bak 2″, the sequel that isn’t really a sequel to their 2003 breakthrough hit“Ong Bak”isn’t even finished yet, but that won’t stop Thailand’s SahamongkolfilmInternational from selling it everywhere and anywhere. One of the firstdeals is to Germany’s Splendid Films, which splendidly grabbed “Ong Bak2″ for “low seven figures”, saysVariety.Meanwhile, in America the Weinstein Brothers still owns the rights to“Ong Bak 2″, which means we can expect to see the film released in U.S.theaters in about two years (at least a year after everyone else in the world has seen it, of course) with a crappy soundtrack, as the Weinstein Brothers are wont to do with their Asian action releases.
Not a whole lot of info is available about “Ong Bak 2″, but here’s a summary of the plot fromhere:
A young man in the Ayutthaya period grows up among villagers who preserve the legacy of the traditional khon masked .He becomes an outcast when he finds that his firm limbs weren’t made topursue the specialty of his ancestors, but with the advice of amysterious guru he’s able to develop a new style of fighting whichmixes the strength of martial arts with the regal elegance of khondance. Then he’s ready to go out and fight the enemy.
And I’m guessing somewhere along the way someone (probably aforeigner) steals something that pisses the young man off. Tony Jaa isalways having people steal shit from him in his movies.
“Ong Bak 2″ will star Tony Jaa, who will also take up directingreins, with collaborator Panna Rittikrai just producing this timearound. Expect a possible early 2008 release. Maybe.
Here’s a billboard of “Ong Bak 2″ snapped (I’m guessing) somewhere in Cannes viaRotten Tomatoes:
