China's Lanzhou Military Region versus Russia's Central Military District
According to Russian media, Russia's former six military districts have been reformed into four bigger joint commands – Southern, Central, Eastern and Western.
Among the four joint commands, Command Center, with headquarters in Yekaterinburg, will control the Central Military District, including the former Volga-Urals Military District and the western part of the Siberian Military District.

However, analysis from Russian media says in terms of military capability and training levels, Russia's Central Military District is unable to rival China's Lanzhou Military Region, though it owns military advantages over the most Central Asian countries.
Analysis says Russia's Command Center is the strategic reserve force for other three commands and is mainly responsible for Central Asia. The troops under Command Center include 1 tank brigade, 7 motorized infantry brigades, 2 special brigades, 2 missile brigades, 1 artillery brigade, 1 rocket brigade, 2 anti-aircraft missile brigades. The Air Fore under Command Center includes 48 MiG-31 fighter jets, 32 Mi-24 military helicopters, 80 transport aircraft and helicopter, and 30 strategic bombers.
Military equipment in China's Lanzhou Military Region
Analysis points out similar with Russia's command Center, China's Lanzhou Military Region also faces the direction of Central Asia. Its combating potential ranks the 5th among China's seven military regions, while its Air Force ranks 6th. Analysis says except J-11 fighter jets, other advanced military equipment haven't been in place yet. However, the overall strength of Lanzhou Military Region is stronger than Central Asian countries' troops including Russia's Central Military District.
Further analysis also assumes China would control Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan just through economic measures if conflicts broke out between China and Central Asian countries. Besides, though weapons of Kazakhstan's troops are a little bit better, Lanzhou Military Region owns numeric advantage. In that case, Russia would have to send troops to engage Chinese troops.
However, Russia's Command Center would not be able to offer substantive help to Kazakhstan's troops along the Sino-Russian border stretching 12,000 kilometers. Meanwhile, Russia's Command East is so weak that it cannot impose threats to China in the northeast.
