China angers US with plan to build nuclear reactors in Pakistan
China has angered the US with plans to build two nuclear reactors in Pakistan, despite fears over the country's political stability.

Beijing is expected to outline the deal to build the reactors in Punjab at a meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) in New Zealand.
But Washington has made its opposition clear, the Times reports. The US argues that because Pakistan has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it could use some of the technology provided by China to make nuclear weapons or pass the information on to another country.
In response, China and Pakistan said that the US itself agreed to sell civilian nuclear fuel and technology to India in 2006, even though Delhi had yet to sign the non-proliferation treaty.
That deal, which lifted a US ban imposed after India tested its first nuclear device in 1974, means that Washington will find it hard to forge a consensus against China's deal with Pakistan.
"Because Washington pressed the NSG and China to exempt India from NSG trade sanctions, it is now more difficult to complain about China's desire to export reactors to Pakistan," Mark Hibbs, a nuclear expert at the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told the Times.
The US is currently trying to convince China to support efforts to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.
Initially, Washington did not protest against China's deal with Pakistan, but lobbying from India has resulted in American officials asking China to "clarify the details".
The US has grave concerns about proliferation from Pakistan and also worries about the potential for Islamic militants to attack or capture Pakistani nuclear sites.
