徐百柯：谁为季羡林任继愈二先生撰墓志铭

　　假设一下，如果季羡林先生独驾鹤西去，堪为他撰写墓志铭的，大概是任继愈先生。而如果独独任先生故去，其墓志铭由长他5岁的季先生来做，也再恰切不过。然而事实是，二位先生在同一天辞世。

　　谁来为二老撰写墓志铭，谁能做这两篇文字？细想，无解。

　　最近几年，两位耄耋老者之于我们这个社会，更像是一种仪式性的存在。这一层意思，以国家总理自2003年以来5次看望季羡林先生，彰显得最为明显。

　　文化的传承需要仪式性。这也是为什么尽管本人或坚决请辞或淡然不应，公众还是习惯为他们戴上“国学大师”的冠冕。任何一个文明，总需要个体的可感的存在，来接续某种抽象的群集的传统。但考察这些年来社会对二老尤其是季先生的态度，则难称正常。过于虚无的尊崇，并不能增加文化老人的荣耀，也无法证明传统的活力——甚至恰恰相反，它表征着这种传统在当代是多么地缥缈、脆弱。

　　一个人是不是真的被其时代所理解，中国幽深的文人传统中，有一条标准可作判定：在他身后，是不是有一篇“真正”的墓志铭。远的不说，与季、任二先生都有关系的陈寅恪、胡适二先生，一位撰写了一篇世人传诵的碑铭，另一位则获得了一篇深情凝重的墓志。

　　陈寅恪作《王观堂先生纪念碑铭》，文中论思想自由之真谛曰：“先生以一死见其独立自由之意志，非所论于一人之恩怨，一姓之兴亡……先生之著述，或有时而不章。先生之学说，或有时而可商。惟此独立之精神，自由之思想，历千万祀，与天壤而同久，共三光而永光。”

　　胡适墓志由其友人毛子水撰写：“这个为学术和文化的进步，为思想和言论的自由，为民族的尊荣，为人类的幸福而苦心焦思，敝精劳神以致身死的人，现在在这里安息了。我们相信形骸终要化灭，陵谷也会变易，但现在墓中这位哲人所给予世界的光明，将永远存在。”

　　陈寅恪以比肩王国维的思力、学力、笔力，为王之死赋予了接续与提升中国人文传统的意义。毛子水学术分量远不及胡适，但他堪称真正的“胡适之的朋友”，他对胡适有准确的把握，有理解之同情。

　　那么，在如今这个寥落的时代，谁来为季、任二先生撰墓志铭？以学问论，无解。以气度论，无解。以性情论，无解。仅以理解论，还是无解——若真的理解，便不会如此喧嚣地待他们。
